What is Pancake day / Shrove Tuesday?
The day before Ash Wednesday is typically known as Pancake Day but historically its called Shrove Tuesday. The name Shrove comes from the old Middle English word ‘Shriven’ which means to go to confession to say sorry for the wrong things you’ve done. The reason why it became known as Pancake day is that it is an old English custom to use up all the fattening /gluttonous ingredients left in the house. In the old days, the most common fattening ingredients that people had were eggs and milk. Which make perfect pancakes!
In other countries its known as Mardi Gras – which means Fat Tuesday in French. Famous celebrations and carnivals also happen in Rio Janeiro / Brazil, New Orleans / USA, Venice / Italy and Sydney / Australia. The famous Pancake Races originated back in 1445 when a woman in Buckinghamshire is said to have been caught out by the sound of Church bells before she’d finished making a pancake. What was her solution? She sprinted from her home to her local Church still carrying her frying pan, flipping the pancake to prevent it burning.

What are the options for making Pancake Day that little bit more magical and awesome we hear you asking?
You could buy silicon moulds of your favourite superheroes or characters. These moulds are non-stick, heat resistant and make it easy/safe to lift from a hot pan.
Alternatively, Amazon sells Star Wars Movie Pancake Molds but be warned they are a little pricey as they’re mostly only available in the US and not available to buy anywhere else. They retail for around £47 / $50.
For Spiderman and Star Wars fans this Pancake Maker from Amazon is perfect if you’re struggling for time. The Star Wars one makes R2D2 and Darth Vader pancakes and the Spiderman one makes his iconic eyes and logo. Retails for $34.99.
